When Brian Moore, KSC’s Analytical Instrumentation Engineer, saw an article in LifeHacker about generating your own QR codes, he sat up and took notice. Why couldn’t he attach a QR code to a piece of lab equipment ? The code could take students to a web page with directions for using that particular machine. No more lost paper. No more having the directions languish on a website that was never looked at.
Starting this fall Brian has been outfitting some of the most used machines in the Environmental Studies and Chemistry labs with those codes and writing extensive documentation that the codes link to. The resulting Google doc that is displayed is a rich source of information. Brian has been experimenting with the format and has come up with
an easy to use page that contains text directions, graphics, links to spreadsheets containing settings and even videos of the process. The student can delve into step-by-step directions or link out to a video.
He is now working on an efficient way to add subtitles to the videos so that you can see and read the process at the same time.
